Dune memborong habis Oscar di kategori teknis, seperti visual effects dan editing, sementara Drive My Car dari Jepang berhasil juara di kategori international feature film, menjadi film Jepang kedua, setelah Departures yang meraih Oscars di kategori tersebut.
Will Smith yang menang kategori aktor terbaik di film King Richard, sebelumnya sempat terlibat dalam perselisihan dengan Chris Rock saat komedian tersebut membuat lelucon tentang istrinya, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Terdapat satu kejutan, yaitu untuk kategori paling ditunggu-tunggu, film terbaik. Dilihat dari ajang-ajang penghargaan bergengsi lainnya, banyak yang mengira bahwa The Power of the Dog atau Dune yang memenangkan film terbaik, wajar saja, karena dua film itu mendominasi kategori-kategori dan memenangkan banyak penghargaan sebelumnya, namun yang memenangkannya justru CODA, film tentang seorang anak dari keluarga tunarungu yang bercita-cita menjadi pemusik.
