Salah satu nama yang harus diwaspadai pada ajang yang akan digelar awal tahun 2015 ini adalah Sam Smith. Penyanyi solo pendatang baru itu tidak bisa dianggap remeh. Bermodal satu album debut, Smith sukses masuk ke dalam lima nominasi. Siapa pun tahu bagaimana ketatnya persaingan untuk masuk nominasi Grammy. Terlebih, bagi anak "kemarin sore".
Seperti bocah polos tanpa perasaan bersalah, Smith masuk ke nominasi paling bergensi, Album of the Year. Padahal, ada senior-senior di sana seperti Beyonce dan Pharrell Williams. Belum lagi Smith juga nongol di nominasi lain yang tidak kalah penting seperti Record of the Year, Song of the Year, serta Best Pop Vocal.

Melihat nama-nama yang berada di daftar nominasi, nampaknya Grammy 2015 lebih mudah ditebak karena tidak ada legenda yang turun gunung seperti pada Grammy 2014. Daft Punk yang alfa menelurkan album selama delapan tahun tiba-tiba menghentak dengan "Random Access Memories" dan sukses menang telak di Grammy 2014.
Metrotvnews.com memprediksi persaingan ketat justru terjadi di nomor kategori Best New Artist. Nama Iggy Azalea dan Sam Smith nampak sama kuatnya. Mereka berdua membawa dampak besar di jalur musik masing-masing. Smith menawarkan musik yang sederhana, memikat, dan manis, sedangkan Azalea menyegarkan dunia penyanyi pop perempuan yang belakangan dikuasai oleh Katty Perry dan Lady Gaga.
Satu hal lain yang menarik melihat daftar nominasi adalah tidak adanya lagu "Rude" atau nama "Magic!". Padahal, band asal Kanada itu sempat menjadi penghuni tangga lagu cukup lama dengan lagu reggae fussion mereka, "Rude". Tentu para juri Grammy memiliki alasan bijak dalam menyortir mana yang pantas dan tidak memegang tongkat estafet musik dunia di tahun 2015.
