Jakarta: The government has determined that 1 Ramadan 1445 Hijri falls on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Thus, the first fasting day for Muslims will not be tomorrow.
"1 Ramadan falls on Tuesday, March 12, 2024," said Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas at the Ministry of Religious Affairs building in Central Jakarta on Sunday, March 10, 2023.
The initial determination of Ramadan is based on the results of the isbat session held this evening. Yaqut directly chaired the meeting.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs uses two methods in the isbat session, namely hisab (calculation) and rukyat (direct observation of the hilal or crescent moon). The hilal's height is declared above the horizon.
"We have conducted the isbat session," said Yaqut.
This determination also refers to the criteria agreed upon by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS). The rule states that 1 Ramadan is set when the hilal is at three degrees and elongation is at 6.4 degrees.
The initial determination of Ramadan is also based on reports from 134 locations designated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Observations are carried out by the Regional Offices (Kanwil) of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, religious courts, Islamic organizations, and other institutions.
"This is the result of the isbat session that we conducted and agreed upon together," said Yaqut.
