Jakarta: The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has been quite vocal in its condemnation of the bomb blasts that ripped through three churches and three luxury hotels in Sri Lanka.

"The bombings in Sri Lanka are a humanitarian tragedy, as the bomb blasts took place at a time when Christians were celebrating their religious holidays. The several bombings across Sri Lanka will remain a stark page in the history of human life," MUI Deputy Chairman Zainut Tauhid Saadi noted in Jakarta on Monday.

At least 290 people lost their lives, while several hundred suffered injuries during a spate of bomb blasts striking luxury hotels and churches throughout Sri Lanka, on Sunday, Apr 21, at around 9 a.m. local time.

Saadi remarked that the Sri Lankan bombings had no links to any religion. The bombings ran counter to Islamic values since Islam teaches peace and not violence.

"Inhuman acts are not justified by religious teachings," he emphasized.

Saadi believes such violent acts defy common sense. Furthermore, Saadi conveyed his condolences to the Sri Lankans.

"I pray that the victims' families have the strength and fortitude to face this situation," he noted.
In the meantime, PBNU, the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, called the bombing tragedy in Sri Lanka a gruesome crime that killed 290 people, including children and women.

PBNU Secretary General Helmy Faishal Zaini, in a written statement received in Jakarta, Monday, denounced any form and act of violence, encompassing the actions of attacking parties viewed as being different.

Zaini opined the principle of benefit to humanity must ensure adherence to a framework encompassing the five key purposes of the Islamic Divine law of faith, life, intellect, progeny, and prosperity. The bombing tragedy runs counter to the Islamic ethical framework based on the Maqaasid Syariah, or the higher purposes of the Islamic Divine law. (Antara)
