New York : Israel and Palestinian group Hamas have declared a ceasefire after battling for 11 days in Gaza.
“After the ceasefire was agreed, pressures have to be given to urge the launching of negotiations so that the root cause of the issue could be concluded, which is the occupation of Palestine,” said Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi after attending a UN General Assembly session on Palestine in New York on Friday.
"If the core issue is unable to be solved, the Foreign Affairs Ministers are sure that similar violence will continuously recur," said Retno.
As such, she expressed the importance for the international community to use their influence.
In said UN General Assembly session, Minister Retno delivered three suggestions from Indonesia. The first one is to stop all violence and military acts to prevent more casualties. Second is to ensure access for humanitarian aid. The last suggestion delivered by the Indonesian delegation is to attempt a credible multilateral negotiation round.
The ceasefire has been effective since Friday at 02.00 am local time. (Translator: Natasha Celia)
