Jakarta: The Indonesia-UK Partnership Forum has affirmed both countries' commitment to improving their bilateral relationship in the future.

The forum was held in the city of London  on Monday. It was attended by Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Indonesian Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy, British Deputy Prime Minister David Lidington and British Asia-Pacific Affairs Minister Mark Field.

At the forum, the two countries agreed to strengthen their bilateral relationship in a number of sectors, including England's support in improving human resources through education.

The partnership was the follow-up to the government's priority under the leadership of President Joko Widodo that focusses on improving human resources.

Aside from discussing the partnership in education sector, the forum also discussed other prioritized sectors, such as potential economic partnership and trade agreement following the UK's decision to exit the European Union (EU).

An agreement was also made to revitalize the Joint Working Group on Creative Economy, in attempt to improve both countries' partnership in the creative economy industry.

The UK also reaffirmed Indonesia's position as its strategic partner, especially in addressing terrorism, climate change, and the growing issue of global intolerance trend.

To implement the partnership in the prioritized sectors, Foreign Affairs Minister of both countries signed an MoU in maritime sector, agreeing the establishment of Bilateral Maritime Forum (BMF) that would become a media to improve collaboration in handling the maritime issues. This is in line with the government's priorities related to the Global Maritime Fulcrum.

“This meeting paid a major attention to the partnership improvement in trade, investment, education, and cyber security," Retno said in a press release on Tuesday.

“I also especially brought up a number of international issues that should become common interests, such as Palestine, Afghanistan, and Rakhine State," she noted.

Simultaneously, both countries also held their first dialogue on the defense sector during the forum.

The Partnership Forum was initially held in 2007, that was chaired by Indonesian Foreign Minister and invited Indonesian Minister of Defense. It was the follow-up to the agreement made by the head of government of both countries in 2006 to strengthen their bilateral relationship and hold strategic dialogues on multilateral and global issues.?
