Jakarta: After successfully being re-elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Indonesia revealed three main priorities in carrying out its duties.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that Indonesia is committed to the protection and promotiont of human rights.
"First, Indonesia will consistently encourage the promotion and protection of human rights both in the region and at the global level," Retno said at his office on Thursday, October 17, 2019.
Secondly, Indonesia will enhance international cooperation to improve countries' capacities. Lastly, Indonesia will strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders to support the 2020-2024 Human Rights National Action Plan.
"Indonesia also has a greater chance to push the UN Human Rights Council to be more effective and efficient, objective, transparent, fair, non-political and impartial and open dialogue with all parties," he continued.
By becoming a member of the Human Rights Council, Indonesia holds two important positions at the United Nations next year. The other position held by Indonesia is being a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Representing the Asia-Pacific region, Indonesia competed with Japan, China, South Korea, Iraq and the Marshall Islands for four seats on the UN Human Rights Council.
The urgency of Indonesia to become a member of the UN Human Rights Council is considered to be in line with the efforts to promote and protect human rights contained in Law No. 39 of 1999 concerning Human Rights.
