The Hague: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi delivered her statement from the headquarters of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands, on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 18:06 WIB. This oral statement is a request from the UN General Assembly to the ICJ.
Expressing her views, Minister Retno emphasized that Israel has no intention to respect, let alone comply with, its international legal obligations.
Minister Retno also quoted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement: "nothing will stop us – not The Hague (ICJ) nor anyone else."
This is also evident from Israel's actions in Gaza, which continue to carry out indiscriminate campaigns of destruction against civilians in the Gaza Strip.
"It seems that nearly 30,000 deaths are not enough for Israel because they are on the verge of launching another attack on Rafah, which used to be the only gateway for humanitarian aid that saved lives in Gaza," Minister Retno asserted before the judges of the International Court.
"No country should be given the freedom to do whatever they want to weaker nations. This is why we have international law. Therefore, we need to uphold it. The role of the ICJ is crucial in maintaining what is referred to as the rule-based international order," Minister Retno emphasized.
"There is great hope from the international community. I repeat, great hope that the ICJ can provide sound opinions for the sake of justice and humanity," Minister Retno added.
The Minister added that all parties have a collective moral obligation to provide information regarding the questions posed to the court.
