ASEAN, South Korea Agree to Further Enhance Cooperation

Jakarta: The 25th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Dialogue held virtually Tuesday reaffirmed the commitments of both sides to further enhance cooperation and strengthen partnership.
 
The Senior officials of ASEAN and the ROK took note of the progress made in ASEAN-ROK cooperation over the last year including through following up on the outcomes of the 21st ASEAN-ROK Summit and activities to implement various areas of cooperation under the new ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action (2021-2025). 
 
"Cooperation continued to be strengthened despite the impact of the covid-19 pandemic, specifically in public health, disaster management, education, culture exchanges, connectivity and narrowing development gaps," stated the ASEAN Secretariat in a press release on Tuesday.

The meeting highlighted the importance of ASEAN-ROK cooperation in addressing the covid-19 pandemic. 
 
ASEAN appreciated the ROK’s support for ASEAN’s efforts in mitigating the impact of the pandemic, including through its contribution to the covid-19 ASEAN Response Fund, and encouraged the ROK’s cooperation in the areas of vaccine development, production and distribution in the ASEAN region.
 
Both sides welcomed further cooperation in the post-pandemic recovery phase in the following areas: cybersecurity; digital economy; development of MSMEs; science, technology and innovation; tourism; education; culture exchanges; climate change and disaster management; public health; smart cities; and connectivity.
 
The meeting also discussed ways to further strengthen the partnership and agreed to advance ASEAN-ROK cooperation through promoting synergy between the ROK’s New Southern Policy and ASEAN’s major strategies and initiatives including the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework.
 
Senior officials of ASEAN and the ROK also exchanged views on regional issues of common interest and concern such as developments in the Korean Peninsula and the South China as well as the situation in Myanmar.
 
The 25th ASEAN-ROK Dialogue was co-chaired by Permanent Secretary, SOM Leader of Brunei Darussalam Emaleen Abd Rahman Teo and Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, SOM Leader of the ROK Yeo Seung-bae. Senior Officials of ASEAN Member States or their representatives and the Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Political-Security Community were in attendance.
