Indonesia, EU Hold Human Rights Dialog

Jakarta: Indonesian Delegates held a human rights dialog with the delegates of European Union (EU) last week.
 
According to a press statement released by Foreign Ministry's Directorate of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs on Monday, November 11, 2019, both parties commited to continue the bilateral dialogue framework that is proven to deliver contribution in improving Indonesia-EU relationship.
 
“Indonesian government is committed to ensure the betterment and protection of Human Rights,” said Achsanul Habib, the Director of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who acted as the Chief of Indonesian Delegates in the meeting. 

“Indonesia strives to fulfill not only the people’s civil and political rights, but also their economic, social, and cultural rights,” he added.
 
Despite the existing difference of stances between Indonesia and EU regarding some Human Rights issues in international forums, Indonesian Delegates declared that the different opinions are parts of multilateral cooperation system.
 
“The different points of views remind us about the core of multilateral cooperation system in the Human Rights sector, which shall put forward dialogues and constructive cooperation in order to build the states’ capacities to improve and protect the Human Rights,” asserted Director Habib.
 
The 8th Indonesia-EU Dialogue specifically discussed various agendas regarding the development of Human Rights issues in EU and Indonesia; people’s access towards justice; International Humanitarian Law compliance rate; the fulfillment and protection of the rights of minority and vulnerable communities; business and Human Rights; freedom of speech and public gathering rights protection; and cooperation regarding Human Rights in the UN and other multilateral forums.
 
The Delegates of Indonesia also shared a number of efforts conducted by the state to improve and protect Human Rights, including those in business and Human Rights sector. The government has successfully published the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) as the national reference. The document serves as the guideline for all national stakeholders to implement the values of UNGPs. 
 
“Indonesia warmly welcomes further actions following-up the dialogues, such as multilateral cooperation enforcement; combating hoaxes and disinformation; tackling human trafficking; and guarantee on freedom of religion,” added Director Habib.
 
Some human rights concerns in Indonesia were also mentioned in the meeting, for example in implementation of death penalty, acts of discrimination, and the Crime Code draft bill.
 
Other than the representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesian delegates consisted of the officials from the Indonesian Embassy in Brussel; the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security of Indonesia; the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection; and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
