World Leaders Congratulate Biden's Election Victory

Jakarta: World leaders have tweeted or issued statements congratulating United States (US) president-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris on the win.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada and the US enjoy an extraordinary relationship – one that is unique on the world stage.

"I look forward to working with President-elect Biden, Vice President-elect Harris, their administration, and the United States Congress as we tackle the world’s greatest challenges together," said the Canadian leader in a written statement on Saturday evening local time.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted his congratulations saying the US is his country's most important ally.

"The US is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security," the British leader stated,

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Biden and acknowledged Harris, whose mother emigrated from India.

Harris will become the first female, first black and first South Asian to become US Vice President.

"Heartiest congratulations @KamalaHarris! Your success is pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans. I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership." he tweeted.

According to the US think tank, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a Biden triumph would repudiate incumbent Donald Trump's "America First" platform and the hyper-nationalist, unilateralist and sovereigntist mindset that undergirds it.

Such a stunning shift in America’s global orientation would have major implications for global cooperation on everything from climate change to US relations with other countries, especially its Western allies .

On climate change, one of Biden’s first steps after inauguration would be to rejoin Paris Agreement on climate change, as a component of his proposed $2 trillion climate plan.

On Iran, Biden could restore American credibility toward nuclear nonproliferation by leading the US back into the Iran nuclear deal, formally the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA.
