Jakarta: The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the immediate and unconditional release of hundreds of boys, reportedly abducted by suspected bandits, after an attack on their school in northwest Nigeria.
Over three hundred children are reported to be still missing, with many feared abducted, after armed gunmen stormed the all boys Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina state, late Friday evening.
"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the 11 December attack on a secondary school in Katsina State, Nigeria, and the reported abduction of hundreds of boys by suspected armed bandits," said the Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, in a statement on Sunday.
"The Secretary-General calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children and for their safe return to their families," the spokesman stated.
The Secretary-General reiterated that attacks on schools and other educational facilities constitute a grave violation of human rights.
He also reaffirmed the solidarity and support of the UN to the Government and people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime.
