The Hague: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized that respecting the basic rights of the Palestinian people must be upheld to articulate the legal consequences of Israel's illegal practices there. She made this assertion in an oral statement at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

"I want to outline the legal consequences arising from these Israeli policies and practices. It must begin by respecting the basic rights of the Palestinian people, especially the right to self-determination systematically denied by Israel," she stated firmly on Friday, February 23, 2024.

The ICJ, Retno emphasized, must declare that Israel's overall occupation is illegal.

She quoted the legal maxim stating that no one can enjoy legal benefits from illegal actions. "Therefore, Israel's efforts to make its occupation permanent will never be a valid basis for claiming legitimate rights over Palestinian territory," she continued.

In line with this, Retno continued, all countries and the UN must not recognize the illegal situation resulting from Israel's violations of international law.

"All countries must not provide any assistance to uphold these violations," she stressed.

Retno also urged all countries and the UN to ensure Israel's compliance with its obligations under international law.

"I want to conclude by emphasizing that no country is above the law. That no country is above the law. And the sanctity of this Court must be upheld," exclaimed Retno.

"Indonesia believes that this legal motion is also a motion of global conscience. It should not be another item on the list, another thing ignored, another call to be disregarded, openly disregarded by Israel. Never again means never again," she emphasized.

Retno reaffirmed that Indonesia established an international system with the belief that every human being, without exception, is protected by law.

She posed the question, "Should the international community continue to allow Israel to manipulate the use of international law to justify their illegal actions against the basic rights of the Palestinian people?"

"For Indonesia, we will not. And once again, our hope lies with this court, because this court is the Guardian of Justice," concluded Foreign Minister Retno.
