Jakarta: Democratic Party lawmaker Syarief Hasan asked the government to have a strong hand against the Philippine militant group Abu Sayyaf. The comment was made in response to a ransom demand of IDR8.3 billion to release three Indonesian citizens who were taken hostage.
"Do not compromise," said the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I member at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta on Wednesday, December 11, 2019.
According to him, this kind of incident does not happen once or twice. In order to stop the incident, the government should find the root of the problem.
"If I'm not mistaken this is the fourth one. It should be evaluated. Maybe some areas are poorly monitored. Maybe some forms of cooperation should also be evaluated," he said.
Three Indonesian citizens were abducted by the Abu Sayyaf group in September 2019 in the waters of Lahad Datu, Malaysia. Through a video, they asked the intervention of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
The three Indonesian citizens are Indonesian fishermen who work in Malaysia. They are Maharudin Lunani (48), his son Muhammad Farhan (27), and another crew member Samiun Maneu (27).
According to reports, the hostages were in Barangay Kagay, Indanan, Sulu, on Tuesday, November 3, 2019. The area is controlled by the Abu Sayyaf subgroup headed by Sibih Pisih.
