EU Stands Ready to Assist Flood-Affected Timor Leste: Spokesperson

Brussels: The European Union (EU) stands in full support of the Government and people of Timor-Leste following the devastating floods that have affected Díli and other parts of the country. 
 
"Our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. We offer our condolences to the families of the victims," said EU spokesperson Nabila Massrali in a statement on Monday.
 
"We are closely monitoring the situation via the Emergency Response Coordination Centre. As a first step, we have triggered the Copernicus Emergency Management Service for damage assessment. We stand ready to provide further assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, if requested," the spokesperson stated.

According to media reports, at least 21 people died in the country and many more are missing. 
 
Large parts of Dili are inundated, with water level as high as two meters reported in some neighbourhoods. 
 
The Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) under the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) detected the Tropical Depression (TD) 99S on Friday and issued an early warning on Saturday which states that TD 99S has a high potential to grow into a Tropical Cyclone in the next few days and has the potential to cause extreme weather impacts. 
 
On Monday, the Tropical Depression was reported to have strengthened and was named Tropical Cyclone 26S (SEROJA) which is located in the Sawu Sea, southwest of Timor Island, 96 km north-west of Rote Island, with Maximum Sustained Wind speed of 65 km/h.
