Washington: United States (US) National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Washington, D.C. to discuss opportunities to deepen the US-Indonesia Strategic Partnership.

"Sullivan informed Foreign Minister Marsudi that the United States will provide an additional $30 million in COVID-19 assistance to Indonesia, bringing the total US assistance to Indonesia since the start of the pandemic to more than $65 million," stated the White House in a press release on Monday.

"Sullivan underscored the United States’ enduring commitment to Southeast Asia and reiterated our support for ASEAN centrality and ASEAN’s essential role in the Indo-Pacific’s regional architecture," it added,

According to him, the US will continue high-level engagement with Indonesia and the region as part of our efforts to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.

"They also discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues including the climate crisis and the importance of freedom of the seas and adherence to UNCLOS principles in the South China Sea," it stated.

"They shared deep concerns regarding the crisis in Burma and recommitted to promoting a swift return to democracy," it added.

Last week, US Ambassador Sung Y. Kim of the US Mission to Indonesia announced the arrival of 3.5 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine from the US Government.

These are in addition to the 4.5 million doses of Moderna donated by the US in July.

This shipment was delivered through the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC), a global initiative to support equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
