Indonesia Says Multilateral Diplomacy Best Way to Resolve Iran Nuclear Issue

Wahyu Dwi Anggoro • 08 March 2021 12:34
Vienna: Indonesia has called the United States (US) to return to the negotiating table to resolve the Iran nuclear issue in accordance with its commitments contained in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan Action).

Indonesia has also asked the US and Iran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to fulfill their obligations under the JCPOA.

The call was conveyed by the Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations (UN) in Vienna, Dr. Darmansjah Djumala, in a meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) of the IAEA in Vienna last week which was attended by all members of the IAEA.

During the meeting, Ambassador Djumala expressed concern over the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and the re-imposition of unilateral sanctions on Iran.

He also welcomed the positive signal from the US Government to re-engage through multilateral forums on this issue.

"In line with Indonesia's call, the US Delegation at the Meeting has also shown indications that the new US government is willing to use multilateral diplomacy to have a dialogue with Iran and return to the JCPOA negotiating table. The initiative is welcomed by many IAEA member countries," stated the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna in a press release on Monday.

Ambassador Djumala also expressed concern over Iran's stance to stop implementing voluntary transparency measures to the IAEA last February.

However, Indonesia also noted positive developments in the form of a bilateral technical understanding between the IAEA and Iran that would allow the IAEA to continue its mission of carrying out verification and supervision of Iran's nuclear program which is necessary for 3 months.

"Indonesia asks all parties to resolved this issue without delay," it stated.

For Indonesia, the JCPOA agreement remains an essential element in the global security architecture, and sustainability must be preserved by all parties, and multilateral diplomacy is the best way to resolve the Iran nuclear issue.

Apart from the Iran nuclear issue, at the same Meeting, Indonesia also conveyed a number of positions and national interests related to the safety and application of nuclear technology.

The IAEA BoG Meeting which was held on March 1-5 is a forum for IAEA member countries to discuss a number of issues related to nuclear power.
