Jakarta: The United States (US) Senate has confirmed Janet Yellen as the first ever woman to become US Treasury Secretary.
On Monday evening local time, the former Federal Reserve chairwoman was confirmed in a broad bipartisan support of 84-15 votes.
"The swift confirmation of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the first woman to head that department, is great news for our country. No one is better prepared to help President Biden steer us out of this financial crisis," said Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in a statement on Monday.
"Secretary Yellen brings with her a wide range of experience. I’ve known her since she was the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. She served on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and became the first woman to chair the Fed," she stated.
Yellen was a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 1994 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2018. She was the 15th chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018. In addition to that, she also chaired the Council of Economic Advisers under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 1999.
According to the Senator, Yellen has a deep understanding of how the economy affects American communities and businesses.
"She knows the economy is more than a collection of abstract charts and figures, it reflects the real-world issues facing everyday Americans," Feinstein stated.
"Secretary Yellen’s confirmation shatters another glass ceiling. In a field dominated by men, it’s refreshing to finally see a woman leading the Treasury Department," she added.
