Vaccinated Europeans Now Outnumbered Those Infected by Covid-19: WHO

Geneva: More citizens living in Europe have now been vaccinated than the number infected, according to World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge.

However, although new cases and hospitalizations are falling, the threat remains present.

Although new cases fell significantly last week, for the first time in two months, infection rates across the region remain extremely high.

"The virus still carries the potential to inflict devastating effects," Kluge said in a video message on Thursday.

Since the beginning of vaccination drive in Europe, approximately 16 per cent of the region’s population has had a first vaccine dose, as well as 81 per cent of health workers in 28 countries throughout the region.

"To date, some 215 million doses of vaccine have been administered”," said the WHO official.

"In the context of the pandemic, it is a combination of vaccines and strong public health measures that offer us the clearest path back to normal," he stated.
