Foreign Countries Cannot Build Military Bases in Indonesia: Minister Retno

Jakarta: Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi has stressed that foreign powers cannot establish military bases in Indonesian territory.
 
"Indonesian territory cannot be used as military bases or military facilities by any countries," Minister Retno said during a virtual press briefing here on Friday.
 
"Our position is based on Indonesian foreign policy guidelines and principles," Minister Retno added.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia's Free and Active foreign policy doesn't allow the existence of foreign military facilities in Indonesian territory. In ASEAN, Indonesia is one of the strong supporters of Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN) in ASEAN. In addition, Indonesia also consistenly rejects the existence of foreign military facilities in Southeast Asia
 
Earlier this month, the US Department of Defense announces the release of its annual report on "Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China (PRC)."
 
The report serves as an authoritative assessment on military and security developments involving China.
 
This report accounts for the China's national strategy and the drivers of China’s security behavior and military strategy, covers key developments in military modernization and reform of People's Liberation Army (PLA), and provides new insights into China's strategic ambitions in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
 
"Beyond its current base in Djibouti, the PRC is very likely already considering and planning for additional overseas military logistics facilities to support naval, air, and ground forces," the report said.
 
The PRC has likely considered locations for PLA military logistics facilities in Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Seychelles, Tanzania, Angola, and Tajikistan," the report said.
