The Hague: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi outlined the legal consequences arising from Israel's policies and genocidal practices in Palestine. The minister made these remarks in an oral statement regarding Palestine at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.
It must begin by respecting the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, especially the right to self-determination systematically denied by Israel.
"The court must declare that Israel's overall occupation is illegal. Therefore, we must end this illegal situation," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at the ICJ court in The Hague on Friday, February 23, 2024.
"Israel must completely, unconditionally, and immediately cease all actions and policies that violate the law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory," emphasized the minister.
The minister warned that the continued presence of Israeli forces in the West Bank and Gaza makes it impossible to see Israel's compliance with its obligations. Therefore, it is crucial for Israel to withdraw its forces.
Given the nature of this illegal occupation, Israel's withdrawal must not be subject to any preconditions or negotiations. "They must withdraw now! I repeat, they must withdraw now!!" said Foreign Minister Retno.
To the ICJ, Minister Retno mentioned that Israel also has an obligation to provide reparations to both the State of Palestine and the Palestinian people.
Minister Retno recalled the legal adage stating that no one can enjoy legal benefits from illegal actions.
Therefore, Israel's efforts to make its occupation permanent will never be a valid basis for claiming legitimate rights over Palestinian territory.
In line with this, all countries and the UN must not recognize the illegal situation resulting from Israel's violations of international law.
All countries must not provide any assistance to uphold these violations.
"Furthermore, all countries and the UN must ensure Israel's compliance with its obligations under international law," concluded the first female Indonesian foreign minister.
