Port Vila: On Tuesday 22 August 2023, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Pahala Mansury and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Vanuatu, Matai Seremiah Nawalu, began the groundbreaking to renovate the VIP Lounge of the Bauerfield International Airport, Port Vila. The lounge was devastated by the Judy and Kevin cyclones on March 2023.
The groundbreaking was conducted on the sidelines of Vice Minister Pahala’s visit to Port Vila, Vanuatu, to attend the 22nd Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Summit, 19-24 August 2023. Pahala extended his sympathy for the catastrophe caused by cyclones in Vanuatu.
“As a country that is also prone to natural disaster, Indonesia shares the feeling and stands in solidarity with brothers and sisters in Vanuatu. A friend in need is a friend indeed,” he stressed.
Citing that Airport represents the face of a country, that gives the first impression for all tourists and visitors visiting Vanuatu, Vice Minister Pahala expressed his hope that through this project, Indonesia would contribute to advancing the tourism sector in Vanuatu.
Vice Minister Pahala also hoped that the renovation project will increase people to people contact between Indonesia and Vanuatu. The Airport renovation project is a grant from the Government of the Republic of Indonesian around VUV111,215,860 (USD913,030.19) which involves 30 Indonesian experts and engineers. The design of the VIP lounge has been approved by Vanuatu Authority and will feature Indonesia’s and Vanuatu’s cultures.
“I hope we can have the chance to get to know each other, building mutual understanding, and cementing a closer relationship,” said Minister for Foreign Affairs, Matai Seremaiah.
Seramaiah thanked the government and the people of Indonesia for the support and assistance in VIP Airport renovation.
He hoped that this project will be the momentum for both countries to enhance cooperation in various sectors.
Vice Minister Pahala also hope that this project will unlock further potential cooperation between the two countries, including Indonesian private sectors’ participation in infrastructure projects in Vanuatu. He also stressed that Indonesia stands ready to elevate its level of engagement in Pacific.
“As an associate member, Indonesia is committed to assist member countries of MSG,” stated Pahala.
