China-ASEAN Relations Will Not be Hampered by COVID-19 Outbreak: Ambassador

Jakarta: Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN Deng Xijun strongly believes that the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak will not damage relations between China and ASEAN member countries.
 
The ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers Meeting on COVID-19 took place in Vientiane, Laos on Thurday, February 20, 2020. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers of ASEAN member countries as well as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
 
"The meeting showcased solidarity between China and ASEAN," Ambassador Deng told a press conference here on Friday, February 21, 2020.

"We will cooperate to tackle this epidemic," the Chinese official added.
 
During the meeting, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said collaboration between ASEAN member countries and China are needed to prevent and eradicate the outbreak in the region. Specifically, the Indonesian minister conveyed three important steps to enhance collaboration in the region.
 
First, close coordination between countries in the region to prevent, control, and minimize the impact of the outbreak is an important step. Second, the ASEAN-PRC mechanism in dealing with endemic outbreak crises such as COVID-19 must be strengthened. Third, strengthening communication strategies is essential.
 
Indonesia proposed a hotline between ASEAN and PRC to exchange the latest information. In addition, Indonesia also proposed the establishment of ASEAN-China Ad-Hoc Health Ministers Joint Task Force. On this occasion, Indonesia also expressed its readiness to share various experiences in handling tropical epidemics and diseases.
