Indonesia's Sovereignty Cannot be Bargained: Jokowi

Jakarta: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo stressed that Indonesia would not be afraid in maintaining its territorial sovereignty. There is no bargaining with China over Indonesia's territorial rights in Natuna, Riau Islands.

"Regarding Natuna. There is no such thing as bargaining about sovereignty, about our country's territorial rights," Jokowi stressed opening a plenary cabinet meeting at the State Palace, Jalan Veteran, Jakarta on Monday, January 6, 2020.

The former Jakarta governor said the government's stance about Natuna was correct.  Indonesia must respond firmly and diplomatically and strengthen its defence in Natuna.

"I think all the statements made were very good," he said.

Indonesia has given a note of diplomatic protest to the Chinese Government over the incident in Natuna.  The protest note for violations of Indonesia's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was posted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Chinese coast guard vessels escorted their fishermen to steal fish in Indonesian waters.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also summoned the Chinese Ambassador to express their strong protest.

A spokesman from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Geng Shuang, answered Indonesia's protest note.  Geng said China had never violated international law based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
