OIC Urged to Enhance Cooperation on Covid-19 Vaccine Development

Media Indonesia • 07 September 2020 11:53
Jakarta: The Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has encouraged member countries of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to collaborate in the development of the covid-19 vaccine.

According to the Indonesian agency, independence and access to drugs and vaccines are very important issues.

"It is a strategic step towards efforts to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic globally and also a concrete step in accelerating the implementation of the OIC's NMRAs (national medicines regulatory authorities) Declaration and Action Plan," said Head of BPOM Penny K. Lukito in a written statement on Sunday.

According to her, in the framework of cooperation with the OIC, the BPOM has helped increase the capacity of regulators in OIC countries in supervising drugs and food, increasing the availability of drugs and vaccines, and supporting the independent production of OIC member countries in need.

According to Penny, Indonesia's position as a center of excellence (CoE) in the field of vaccines and biological products at OKI has an important role in encouraging strategic cooperation.

In addition, the BPOM recently held a coordination meeting with the OIC Secretariat Team in a bid to explore collaboration and cooperation.

During the meeting, they agreed to carry out a technical meeting of the NMRAs and the drug and vaccine industries in OIC countries in the form of a virtual workshop with an agenda of exchanging information and experiences related to drug and vaccine development cooperation as well as experiences in dealing with the covid-19 pandemic.
