FM Retno Welcomes South Korean Counterpart in Jakarta

Jakarta: Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi and her South Korean counterpart Kang Kyung-hwa led the Fourth Indonesia-South Korea Joint Commission Meeting in Central Jakarta on Monday, April 8, 2019.
 
"Today I met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea Kang Kyung-Wha. We just completed the Third Joint Commission Meeting," Retno said.
 
During the meeting, the two countries agreed to enhance their trade and economic ties. They are ready to restart the Indonesia-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IK-CEPA) negotations.

In addition to that, the two delegations vowed to improve their collaborations in regional and global forums. They are set to hold the 30th ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit in Busan this November.
 
"The protection of Indonesian migrant workers in South Korea is very important. About 36,000 Indonesian workers currently live in South Korea," Retno noted.
 
The indonesian top diplomat opened the Regional Training on Women, Peace, and Security at Fairmont Hotel, Senayan, Jakarta on Monday morning.
 
The three-day training is aimed to improve women's participation and capacity in the maintenance of peace and security in the region and beyond. The regional meeting is attended by 60 female diplomats from ASEAN member countries, Timor Leste, as well as Papua New Guinea (PNG).
 
In her welcoming speech, Retno called for more serious efforts to mainstream the role of women in the regional peace agenda. In addition to that, Retno urged all stakeholders to build and nurture networks of female peace negotiators and mediators in the region. 
 
"Women are effective agents of peace and tolerance," Retno said.
 
"The role of women in peace and security must not only be an exception but a norm," Retno added.
 
By having its first woman Foreign Minister, Indonesia, the country with the biggest Muslim population, is considered to have complete credentials to be the motor to promote women's participation. Indonesia's achievement in this regard can also be seen from the strong commitment of President Joko Widodo in supporting women's roles, by assigning a number of women ministers with strategic portfolios within Working Cabinet.
