New York: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his deep concern over the continuing violence in occupied East Jerusalem, as well as the possible evictions of Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods.

"He urges Israel to cease demolitions and evictions, in line with its obligations under international humanitarian and international human rights law," sais Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary General, in a statement on Sunday.

According to the UN Chief, Israeli authorities must exercise maximum restraint and respect the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.

All leaders have a responsibility to act against extremists and to speak out against all acts of violence and incitement.

"The Secretary-General urges that the status quo at the holy sites be upheld and respected," the spokesman stated.

"The Secretary-General reiterates his commitment, including through the Middle East Quartet, to supporting Palestinians and Israelis to resolve the conflict on the basis of relevant United Nations resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements," the UN official added.

The violence on Friday has been described as some of the worst seen in Jerusalem for many years.

Some 200 Palestinians and 17 Israeli Police were reportedly injured in fighting around Haram Al-Sharif/Temple Mount.

On Saturday, protesters reportedly threw stones at police, who responded with stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons.

On Sunday, fighting continued in East Jerusalem, ahead of a planned march by an Israeli group through the Old City.
