New York: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stated that the spiraling escalation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel must cease immediately.
"The Secretary-General is gravely concerned by the serious escalations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, including the latest escalation in Gaza, which add to the heightened tensions and violence in occupied East Jerusalem," said Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary General's spokesman, in a statement on Tuesday.
"He is deeply saddened to learn of increasingly large numbers of casualties, including children, from Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, and of Israeli fatalities from rockets launched from Gaza," the spokesperson added.
According to the spokesman, the UN is working with all relevant parties to de-escalate the situation urgently.
"The Secretary-General’s thoughts are with the families of the victims," the UN official said.
According to reports, airstrikes had been carried out in Gaza by Israeli Defense Forces, killing at least 24 Palestinians.
Palestinian armed groups, meanwhile, had launched hundreds of rockets towards Israel.
The development follows protests in Jerusalem at the potential imminent eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods.
