Australian PM Expresses Sympathies over Sunken Indonesian Submarine

Wahyu Dwi Anggoro • 26 April 2021 13:31
Jakarta: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has extended his deepest sympathies to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Indonesian people on the loss of submarine KRI Nanggala-402 and its 53 crew.

"A tragic reminder of the ultimate sacrifice our service people make for their country," the Australian leader wrote on his official twitter page on Sunday.

"It was an honour to contribute to search efforts," he added.

On Wednesday, the Indonesian Navy's Cakra-class submarine went missing during a torpedo drill in the waters north of Bali island.

To help expand the search area and extend the duration of search effort, the Australian Defense Force deployed ANZAC Class frigate Ballarat and support ship Sirius to the site of the incident.

The frigate is equipped with sonar capabilities and an embarked MH-60R helicopter.
