Jakarta: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has summoned several foreign ambassadors to discuss the issue of waste imports.
"So far there has been a follow-up. We have sent back containers that are contrary to the regulations of Indonesia's waste imports," Acting Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Teuku Faizasyah told a press briefing on Wednesday, 30 October 2019.
Faizasyah did not specify how many waste containers have been sent back to their origin countries. He was also reluctant to mention which ambassadors who have been summoned by the ministry.
Faizasyah said that ambassadors from partner nations had affirmed their commitment to being more responsible. They are also committed to following Indonesian regulations regarding waste imports.
"They’ve been called. They are committed to being part of the solution," he said.
According to him, if there is no cooperative response from them, the Indonesian government will take firm actions, including giving a diplomatic note.
"The Indonesian Foreign Ministry hopes that at least the ambassadors of these nations can remind their governments to retrieve the containers of waste," he said.
President Joko Widodo will probably dicuss the issue in the coming ASEAN Summit. The summit will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 30 October to 4 November 2019.
