Jakarta: Former United States (US) Vice President Joe Biden and US Senator Kamala Harris delievered their first speeches as president-elect and vice president-elect on Saturday evening local time.
"The people of this nation has spoken. They have delivered as a clear victory. A convincing victory. A victory for we the people. We have won with the most votes ever cast in a presidential ticket in the history of the nation, 74 million," Biden said.
In his speech, Biden also talked about unity, appealing to Americans who voted for incumbent candidate Donald Trump to bring both sides together.
"I’m humbled by the trust and confidence you’ve placed in me. I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but unify," he said.
"Now for all those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand your disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself, but now let’s give each other a chance," he stated.
Biden has won the race after flipping several states and claiming more than the 270 electoral college votes required for the presidency.
Harris will become the first female, first black and first Asian to become US Vice President.
"While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities," Harris said.
"To the American people who make up our beuatiful country, thank you for turning out in record numbers to make your voices heard. You delivered a clear message you chose hope. and unity, decency, science and truth," she stated.
