Jakarta: Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi chaired the Foreign Policy and Global Health (FPGH) Ministerial Virtual Meeting on Thursday.
The meeting was also attended by ministers from South Africa, Senegal, France, Norway, Thailand, Brazil and WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"I conveyed three messages during the meeting," Minister Retno said during a virtual press briefing here on Friday.
First, FPGH must be a positive force for accessible and affordable covid-19 vaccines for all. It must continue to stand behind multilateral initiatives, such as the Global Allocation Framework within the COVAX Facility, to speed up vaccine development, and ensure equitable and fair allocation.
"No one is safe until everyone is safe," she stated.
Second, The grouping must be a positive force in strengthening our global health governance system. The WHO have been instrumental in guiding countries to navigate this uncharted landscape of covid-19. Nevertheless, the pandemic has also exposed the shortcomings of its global health responses. FPGH must advocate for a stronger and more resilient WHO, including by increasing early warning capacity and response to global health challenges to prevent any future pandemic.
Lastly, FPGH must build resilient national health systems. To achieve this, investments in health systems and health workforce through collaboration must be promoted. In this regard, FPGH can set an example by putting forward meaningful cooperation among ourselves, including exploration of a network of research institutions among our countries.
