Jakarta: ASEAN leaders and representatives today gathered at the ASEAN headquarters in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, to discuss a wide range of regional issues, including the latest situation in Myanmar.
Initiated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting was chaired by Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
This year, Brunei holds the ASEAN chairmanship.
On the situation in Myanmar, the Leaders reached consensus on five points. First, there shall be immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and all parties shall exercise utmost restraint. Second, constructive dialogue among all parties concerned shall commence to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the people.
Next, a special envoy of the ASEAN Chair shall facilitate mediation of the dialogue process with the assistance of the SecretaryGeneral of ASEAN. Fourth, ASEAN shall provide humanitarian assistance through the AHA Centre. Lastly, the special envoy and delegation shall visit Myanmar to meet with all parties concerned.
"We also heard calls for the release of all political prisoners including foreigners," said ASEAN Chairman in a statement on on the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting
The other ASEAN leaders who took part in the meeting included Vietnamese Prime Minister Phm Minh Chính, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Thailand, the Philippines and Laos were represented by their foreign ministers.
Myanmar’s military junta leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, also took part in the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting
