Jakarta: The Indonesian Embassy in Helsinki for the first time held an Indonesian Batik Day event in one of the biggest shopping malls in Helsinki, ITIS Shopping Center, on Monday, October 21, 2019.
Thousands of visitors took turns to admire the batik collection of Gee Batik by designer Sugeng Waskito & traditional hand painting clothes and Batik by Yoseart by designer Yosefin Mariani at the fashion show session in celebration of Indonesian Batik Day.
The event was held to promote and create public awareness about Indonesian Batik which has been recognized as Masterpiece of Oral & Intagible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009.
Dozens of visitors both adults and children showed an extraordinary sense of interest when they tried to make traditional batik using canting (batik pen) and malam (batik wax).
The event also aims to preserve, protect and promote the rich culture, traditions and customs of various local people in Indonesia including the Dayaks from South Kalimantan, Bataks from North Sumatra, Bali and Papua..
Traditional dances introduced to the visitors are the Tor Tor Dance from North Sumatra, Tingang Mura Sentaki from South Kalimantan, Pendet Dance from Bali, the Mohing Asang and Tinggang Mura Sentaki Dance from South Kalimantan.
Indonesian Batik Day, is an integrated promotional activity for Batik, Indonesian culture and a tourism destination for the first time carried out in Finland.
The activity was carried out at the ITIS Shopping center which is one of the largest malls in the Nordic European Region with a crowd of 50,000 visitors per day.
It is hoped that by carrying out such promotional activities, Batik, culture and various potential of Indonesia will be increasingly known by the Finnish public.
