Jakarta: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has discussed escalating tensions between the United States and Iran with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh. Vietnam is currently the President of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN).
"We hope that Vietnam can also continue to strive so that the escalation does not continue," Retno said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta on Thursday, January 9, 2020.
Retno also spoke with the US Ambassador and Iran's Ambassador to Indonesia. Retno said that tensions between the two countries will not continue.
Retno said that the Indonesian government needs more preparation relating to the impact of tensions on Indonesian citizens abroad. Sh revealed that it continues to establish communication with the heads of representatives in Middle Eastern countries.
"Both in Iran, Iraq, and possibly in countries that will be affected if the escalation continues," he explained.
"So we also appeal to Indonesian citizens if at any time they need help, do not hesitate to contact the existing hotline," Retno explained.
Tensions between Iran and the US escalated after Washington killed one of Iran's leading generals, Qassem Soleimani. General Soleimani was killed in a US air strike at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq.
