Jakarta: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi raised the issue of mail-order brides during a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday.
"I recently met with eight human trafficking victims in Pontianak, Kalimantan. They said they were recruited by agents. Some of them suffered domestic and sexual violence," the top Indonesian diplomat said in a written statement released on Wednesday.
The mail-order bride cases occur a lot involving Indonesian women and Chinese men and happen through certain mediators or matchmaking agents. The cases shall not be considered as a domestic issue, but rather as a human trafficking crime according to Law No. 22 of 2007.
The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its representatives in China puts a relentless effort to return the Indonesian victims of the trafficking. From January to July 2019, there are 32 cases of mail-order bride being reported and handled.
From July 31 until August 2, Minister Retno will attend the plenary and retreat meeting of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM), the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting (EAS) meeting, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and other ten meetings with all ASEAN dialogue partners.
The meeting series involve foreign ministers from 10 ASEAN countries and 10 ASEAN speech partners, namely the United States of America, Australia, India, Canada, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russia, New Zealand, China, and the European Union.
