Jakarta: Foreign ministers of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, and Australia are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the Elazig province of Turkey on Friday, January 24, 2020. The five countries are members of MIKTA.
"We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, and wish a quick recovery to the injured," the foreign ministers said in a written statement issued on Wednesday, January 29, 2020.
"We stand in full solidarity with the Government and the people of Turkey in the aftermath of this disaster," they added.
The epicenter of the earthquake was close to the town of Sivrice in Elazig province. A total of 41 people were killed and more than 1,600 were injured.
MIKTA is an informal partnership between Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and Australia. It is an acronym of its five member countries.
Created in 2013 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, MIKTA engages in a variety of activities. Led by foreign ministers of its member countries, the group holds meetings regularly.
