Jakarta: An emergency special session at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States (US) last Friday has achieved a breakthrough, which is the approval of special rights for Palestine. This marks the first time an observer state has been granted rights and privileges approaching those of other UN members.
Palestine has been an observer state at the UN since 2012. This success reaffirms the increasing global support for the Palestinian struggle, further recognition of Palestine as a state in the UN, and the realization of a two-state solution.
According to a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the media on Saturday, May 11, 2024, the resolution titled "Admission of New Members in the United Nations" was co-sponsored by 77 countries, including Indonesia, and received support from 143 UN member states.
Some of the special rights and privileges granted to Palestine include the ability to sit among UN member states, propose resolutions and co-sponsor resolutions, be elected as chair of the UN General Assembly and various committees under it, and fully participate in UN and international conferences under the UN General Assembly.
With Palestine's increasing role towards full UN membership, it is hoped that the political visibility of Palestinian issues and struggles will increase. This is expected to facilitate and expedite the resubmission of Palestine's application for full membership to the UN Security Council. Especially considering that this resolution also acknowledges that Palestine meets the criteria for full membership according to the UN Charter.
Last Friday's UN General Assembly session began with the veto of one permanent member of the UN Security Council on Palestine's application for full membership on April 18. In response to collective calls from Arab countries, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement, the UN General Assembly has taken decisive steps towards the advancement of the Palestinian struggle and international peace efforts.
The success at last Friday's General Assembly session was also supported by Indonesia's active role in garnering support from countries in several regions.
This success is a breakthrough for the equality of Palestinian rights amidst the nations of the world. At the same time, efforts for Palestine's full membership in the UN in the future will continue to be pursued.
