RI Needs Military Hardware that Can Support Disaster Relief Efforts

Christopher Harindra • 26 September 2019 21:20
Jakarta: RAND Corporation security analyst Jonah Blank argued that Indonesia's recent purchases of military hardware does not support the current requirement.

Blank said that Indonesia needs to focus less on offensive military hardware and more towards military hardware that can be utilized for humanitarian reasons.

"I think as an analyst that Indonesia definitely faces the certainty, unfortunately of natural disasters and as President Joko Widodo rightly says that there is not an expectation or a high likelihood of a foreign invasion in the next 20 years," Blank explains at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Jakarta, September 26, 2019.

Blank used the Aceh Tsunami disaster as a key example as to why Indonesia would need such military hardware. He also mentioned Indonesia's recent purchases of AH-64 Apache gunships as an example to solidify his point.

"I would encourage Indonesia to put more emphasis on air-frames that are useful for disaster relief particularly utility aircraft, like fix-wing aircraft that means C-130 Hercules which are big transport aircraft that can get a lot of aid to affected communities,"  said Blank.

He also encouraged Indonesia to invest in more utility helicopters like the  CH-47 Chinook Helicopter that can also provide and carry a substantial amount of aid to affected communities that fix-wing aircraft may not reach.

He added that Indonesia has never had to use jet fighters and helicopter gunships in combat and hopefully would not have to use them in the future.
