Jakarta: United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab met Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at Lancaster House in London on Wednesday.

The ministers discuss international cooperation to find a vaccine for covid-19, strengthening bilateral relations between the UK and Indonesia, tackling climate change, and the UK’s bid to become a dialogue partner with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“I am delighted that the close partnership between the UK and Indonesian governments on health, research and innovation has paved the way to today’s announcement," said UK Ambassador to Indonesia Owen Jenkins in a press statement on Wednesday.

"The UK and Indonesia have been making clear an important truth – that no one is safe until everyone is safe from covid-19 and so a vaccine must be accessible and affordable for all countries," he stated.

On Covid-19, the UK Foreign Secretary emphasised the UK’s commitment to global access to vaccines, including recently announced UK aid funding up to £500 million for the COVAX Advance Market Commitment, a facility to help 92 of the world’s poorest countries access a coronavirus vaccine.

They also discussed the crucial issue of the UK’s bid to be one of ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners to deepen UK cooperation with countries in South East Asia on security, trade and the environment.

“I am pleased to see Indonesia's intention to work together with world-leading scientists from Imperial College London to host clinical trials – a potentially invaluable service to the whole world," the UK Ambassador stated.

"This joint work is built upon the already strong links between Indonesian and UK researchers, through programmes like the Newton Fund. Together we can - and are - making progress," he concluded.
