Jakarta: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the United States (US)’ stated re-engagement with the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the UN Chief, Supporting the WHO is absolutely critical to the world’s efforts for a better coordinated response against covid-19.
With vaccines being a critical tool in the battle against covid-19, the US joining and supporting the COVAX facility will give momentum to efforts to ensure equitable access to vaccines for all countries.
"Now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences," said the Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarris, in a statement on Wednesday.
In his inaugural speech, Biden called for unity and laid out his plan to takle America's ongoing health and economic crises.
"Few people in our nation's history have been more challenged or found a time more challenging or difficult than the time we're in now. Once-in-a-century virus that silently stalks the country. It's taken as many lives in one year as America lost in all of World War II. Millions of jobs have been lost. Hundreds of thousands of businesses closed. A cry for racial justice, some four hundred years in the making moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer," he explained.
"To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity, unity," he stated.
