medcom.id, Jakarta: The outgoing United States (US) Ambassador to Indonesia Robert O Blake hopes the two countries will continue their strong relationship in the future.

Blake is scheduled to return to the US this week. He will enter retirement after more than 30 years in the Foreign Service.

He believes that Indonesia has important role in the international community, especially in spreading positive internationalism across the world.

"Positive internationalism is more needed now," Blake told the audience at his farewell lecture at Wisma Antara, Jakarta, on Monday (7/18).

"The US cannot act alone. We need partners," he added.

According to him, Indonesia has succesfully moved from authoritarianism into robust and dynamic democracy. The country proves that Islam and democracy is compatible.

Blake also praised Indonesia's economic development in recent years. When he first arrived in the country, he observed that most Indonesians were affraid with free trade.

"Now, they are confident they can do it," he continued.

White House has nominated Joseph R Donovan to replace Blake. He is a senior diplomat who spends most of his career in East Asia.
