medcom.id, Jakarta: Change of leadership in Indonesia does not affect the country’s commitment to Palestine. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has proven his commitment in supporting Palestinian independence.

“I can really acknowledge with sincere thanks that the Government of Indonesia is following on the same line, the traditional line, of supporting Palestine,” said Palestinian Ambassador for Indonesia Fariz Mehdawi in an exclusive interview with Metrotvnews.com on Monday (1/25/2016).

“Even i can say that now we are in much stronger  situation as far concern the involvement of Indonesia in support of Palestine,” he added.

Last April, Indonesia held Asian African Summit which adopted declaration affirming support from Asian and African countries to Palestine. Meanwhile this March, Indonesia plans to host Organizaton of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit where the issue of Palestine will be the main topic.

“Jakarta will be venue for maybe another summit at the level of the OIC to discuss the situation in Jerusalem and what could be done to alleviate the situation and to ensure that Jerusalem identity as it is will not be altered by the Israeli policies  or Judaisation of the city,” Mehdawi explained.

Besides supports from the Indonesian Government, Mehdawi also acknowledged continuous aids from Indonesian people. “As usual they are very generous in contributing that little that they have in supporting us,” he said.

Recently, Indonesia Hospital was opened in Gaza. The much needed 110-bed hospital was fully funded by Indonesian people without any involvement from the government. Mehdawi mentioned the project proved strong people to people relations between the two countries.

“ This is done by individual Indonesian not the government. Besides what the government is doing, the people of Indonesia are also generous and kind. They would like  to see themselves that they are contributing even personally. This is very very touching for our people and we highly appreciate that.” He concluded.
