medcom.id, Rotterdam: Jakarta Provincial Government agreed on extending the Sister City Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the city administration of Rotterdam, Netherlands. For Jakarta, the agreement was meant to accelerate the flood prevention policies.
"In the meeting yesterday, the signing of Jakarta Rotterdam Sister City cooperation MoU was conducted. Especially on flood mitigation," said Maruhal, Jakarta Governor's staff joining the entourage to Rotterdam, through a press release for the media, Wednesday (9/23/2015).
The agreement was conducted as Rotterdam is considered to be a city successfully mitigating floods. Therefore, in a visit to the windmill country, Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama conducted a direct observation on several projects considered to be successful in eliminating floods.
The locations visited were Water Plaza, Museum Park, Integrated Urban Area Development in Markthal Market area, as well as the Floating Pavilion City of Rotterdam.
"The projects visited were meant to study the implementation of flood prevention in high density areas. Water reservoirs were build around the areas to avoid flooding," said Maruhal.
At the same place, Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb also conveyed the private sector and academicians' involvements in conducting the development. Moreover, the construction made were also meant to move the nation's economy.
"The need of private involvements is to assist the government in running the economy, as fulfilling the needs of market and public," explained Ahmed.
As an information, Jakarta and Rotterdam have been cooperating since 2005 in the fields of information management, museum management and revolutionary shadow puppet conservation. In 2008, Jakarta and Rotterdam officially became Sister Cities.
