medcom.id, Jakarta: President Joko Widodo officially opened the 2nd International Symposium on Fisheries Crime at Gedung Agung in Yogyakarta on Monday, October 10, 2016.
"Fisheries crime is a transnational crime," Jokowi said during the opening ceremony.
He mentioned that illegal fishing makes Indonesia loses USD20 billion every year. It also threatens coral reefs and other marine ecosystems.
"We combat illegal fishing by capturing and drowning illegal fishing vessels," he continued.
Jokowi stated that the policy is quite successful. Maximum sustainable yield increased to 9.9 million tonnes in 2015 from 7.3 million in 2013.
"We are not satisfied. We want to learn from other countries," he concluded.
