medcom.id, Jakarta: President Joko Widodo appointed Eddy Pratomo as the Presidential Special Envoy for the Establishment of Maritime Borders Between Indonesia and Malaysia.
"The appointment of Presidential Special Envoy is the manifestation of Indonesia's determination and efforts to accelerate the establishment of maritime border between Indonesia and Malaysia," Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned in its written statement received by Metrotvnews.com, Friday (6/12/2015).
The appointment is a follow up on the meeting between President Jokowi and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak during the Presidential State Visit to Malaysia, February 5-7, 2015. It is also accompanied by the meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi with her counterpart in Kinabalu City, January 25-28, 2015, in the effort of accelerating the resolution on the maritime borders establishment between Indonesia and Malaysia.
Based on the agreements by the two state leaders, the tasks of Special Envoy is to provide political consideration, aside from judicial and technical considerations, within the settlement of both countries' maritime borders. Currently, Indonesia and Malaysia are to settle borders in five segments, which are Sulawesi Sea, South China Sea, East Singapore Strait, South Malacca Strait and Malacca Strait.
Ambassador Eddy Pratomo is expected to meet Malaysian PM Special Envoy, Tam Sri Mohd Radzi Abdul Rachman, to discuss the working mainframe agreed within the near future.
Eddy Pratomo is an Indonesian senior diplomat with law school background, as he was stationed at Indonesian Representatives handling bilateral and multilateral issues. Aside from his previous position as the Director General of Law and International Agreement of the Foreign Ministry (2006-2009), Ambassador Eddy Pratomo had also become Indonesian Ambassador to Germany (2009-2013). Currently, he is the Special Staff for the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahman is a Malaysian senior diplomat previously assigned to the bilateral and multilateral Malaysian Representatives. Aside from his position as the Secretary General of the Malaysian Foreign Ministry, he had also become the Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam and Japan. (EPS)
