medcom.id, Surakarta: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed one Indonesian sailor was kidnapped in Malaysian waters.
The ministry's director of protection of Indonesian citizens and legal entities Muhammad Lalu Iqbal mentioned that the kidnapping happened on August 3. The Indonesian government received the information about the incident a day later.
"He is the captain of a Malaysian fishing boat," Iqbal told Metrotvnews.com in Surakarta, Central Java on Sunday (8/8/2016).
Iqbal added that Indonesian diplomats have contacted the ship owner, Malaysian authorities and Philippine authorities.
"The information about the incident is still unclear. We are still undergoing verification," he stated.
The incident occurred in Sabah waters near the southern Philippines. Scores of Indonesian sailors currently are taken hostage by Philippine militants.
