medcom.id, Jakarta: At least 47 countries have confirmed their attendance for Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Extraordinary Summit on Palestine and Al Quds which will be held on March 6-7 in Jakarta.

"From OIC member countries, until now, 47 countries has confirmed their attendance," said Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi to Metrotvnews.com, at her office, Jakarta, Tuesday (3/1/2016).

"About the level, we will get final confirmation maybe on March 5," she added.

She mentioned the high number of participants shows strong commitment from OIC member countries to Palestine considering the summit is only prepared in one month.

"The summit is emergency in nature, we prepare it in short time. Inviting head of states and head of governments in short time is quite a challenge. But the most important is commitment from OIC member countries," she explained.

Retno underlined the Indonesian government understands the urgency of the summit. The conference initially planned to be held in Morocco but later the country revealed it is not ready. The Palestinian government and OIC Secretary General then requested Indonesia to host the event.

"We know the situation is getting worse in Palestine. For example, East Jerusalem that has been declared as the capital of Palestine. Only 36.8 percent of its population are Palestinians," Retno explained.

"Demographically, if the illegal occupation is not stopped, Palestinian territory would be threatened," she continued.

The summit will produce a resolution and so called Jakrta Declaration which consists of concrete measures to help the Palestinian government and people.

Besides OIC member countries, United Nations Security Council members and the Quartet are also invited as observers.
