medcom.id, Jakarta: Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi attended the plenary session of the 49th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Vientiane, Laos on Sunday, July 24.

Retno underlined the importance of ASEAN's unity and centrality for peace and prosperity in the region, especially as ASEAN countries have committed to establish the ASEAN Community.

"ASEAN's unity and centrality is needed to face regional challenges and explore cooperation opportunities," she said at the meeting, according to press release received by Metrotvnews.com on Monday (7/25/2016).

"This is important moment for ASEAN to speak, work and move cohesively," she continued.

Indonesia encouraged other ASEAN countries to implement maritime security cooperation which has been agreed at the East Asia Summit (EAS) last year. The cooperation is crucial to tackle non-traditional threats such as IUU fishing, piracy and human trafficking.

Indonesia also urged ASEAN to establish a framework to protect migrant workers. "The ASEAN Community must give benefits to all citizens including 6.5 million migrant workers in the region," Retno concluded.
