medcom.id, Jakarta: Indonesia and Russia signed five memorandum of understandings (MoUs) on defense, illegal fishing, national archives, Foreign Ministry archives and culture.
The signing of the MoUs was witnessed by President Joko Widodo and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, Russia, on Wednesday, May 18.
Strategic partnership
In a joint press statement, Jokowi said his visit to Russia is intended to increase economic and defense cooperation between the two countries.
"we agreed to reduce trade barriers for crude palm oil from Indonesia," said Jokowi.
"I and President Putin also agreed to strengthen defense cooperation like technology transfer, joint production and training," he continued.
Both countries also reiterated their cooperation to eradicate terrorism through sharing of information.

Trade cooperation
Meanwhile, Putin stated Indonesia and Russia has long history of cooperation. "I believe that what we need is not only bilateral cooperation but also more interactions," he said.
He admitted both leaders agreed to increase trade relations. He revealed proposal to establish free trade zone between the two countries.
Russia also promised more investments in Indonesia especially in maritime and infrastructure fields. "We want to build ships and floating ports," he concluded.
